Special Olympics Unified Sports® programming didn’t just give me a team to play on—it gave me a place where I feel like I belong. As a student with an intellectual disability, I used to feel left out a lot. In school, it sometimes felt like I didn’t really fit in. But that started to change when I joined Unified Sports.

At first, I was really nervous. I didn’t know if I would be good enough or if people would actually want me on the team. But after the first few practices, I felt better. Everyone was kind and supportive. My teammates didn’t focus on what I couldn’t do. They helped me, cheered me on, and made me feel important.

Being in Unified Sports has helped me feel more confident. I used to doubt myself a lot, but now I believe in myself more. Even small things, like making a pass or just trying my best, feel like big wins to me. That confidence has helped me in other parts of my life too, like in class and when talking to other people.

I’ve also made real friends through Unified Sports. These are people who talk to me at school, sit with me at lunch, and include me in things. Before, I didn’t really have that. Now I feel like I’m part of something.

Unified Sports has also taught me important lessons. I’ve learned how to work as a team, be patient, and not give up. I’ve learned that everyone is different, and that’s okay. We all have something to bring to the team.

Being part of Unified Sports makes me feel proud. I’m proud to be on the team, and I’m proud of how much I’ve grown.

Unified Sports didn’t just change my life—it changed how I see myself. I’m not just a student with a disability. I’m an athlete, a teammate, and a friend. And that means everything to me.
