In Step 1, you will

  • Step 1A: Recruit and organize a diverse Equitable Inclusive Leadership Team (EILT)
  • Step 1B: Reflect on the organization's mission and vision and its inclusiveness for all students,
  • Step 1C: Review the organization's Least Restrictive Environment data (LRE), and
  • Step 1D: Construct initial strategies with multiple stakeholders for developing commitment to inclusive education.

Overview

When beginning to develop an inclusive system of education, a frequent question is "Where to start?" Leaders may have identified the direction they want to go and even activities they wish to implement but do not have a roadmap to help them think through how to proceed or plan with intended outcomes to guide their work.

Step 1 is the beginning of building a sustainable system. The foundation built in Step 1 will be continually revisited throughout the journey of building and sustaining an inclusive education system for ALL students. The EILT should regularly ask itself if it is hearing all of the voices and perspectives of all stakeholders to make informed decisions. And, how can it build an understanding of inclusive education beliefs and practices with new members in the organization and the broader community?
