Collaborating with Families

Attitudes

Attitudes are the values and perceptions held about family-school relationships. Some essential beliefs and  attitudes that C&C mentors should demonstrate include:

  • Believing that families are doing the best they can
  • Taking nonjudgmental, non-blaming approaches
  • Knowing that families care about their children’s education
  • Refusing to give up on a family or a student
  • Treating families as collaborators in the educational process, remembering that families are the experts on their children
  • The level of family participation in school will vary and is influenced by many factors; it is the mentor’s role to provide information and resources to support family participation.
