DirectCourse MN Crosswalks

Using the College of Direct Support to Meet the Minnesota DHS 245D Training Requirements

Last Updated 2/2025 using 2021 245D MN Statute and updated CDS and CFSM lessons.

Introduction

This crosswalk is a tool that shows how DirectCourse: College of Direct Support (CDS) can help agencies provide competency-based training to all personnel, supporting the organization’s efforts to meet the Minnesota 245D Training Requirements. Training all employees across an organization using CDS will equip Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and others with skills aligned to meet some of the 245D requirements. In addition to these CDS training tools, license holders must provide training on agency-specific practices, policies, and procedures, and provide information about individuals supported.

This document is divided into two sections. The first section is a crosswalk of 245d Training Requirements to ALL applicable CDS content. The second section contains recommended modules that align with licensing requirements and are available on the DirectCourse learning management system for learning administrators to assign to staff. It is recommended that learning administrators assign learning modules to Frontline Supervisors and Managers first so they are familiar with the content, can reinforce learning, can answer questions, and can discuss the information and implementation of the training with the Direct Support Professionals/Staff they supervise.

Note that many of the content recommends “Linked Content – Agency-Specific Policy and Procedures for Incident Reporting.” Learning administrators can link information to better inform and train employees on agency-specific or person-specific content. For more information about how to link information on DirectCourse, email directcoursemn@umn.edu.

All content that is identified in the crosswalk below is indicated with either Entry (CDS-E), Intermediate (CDS-I), Advanced (CDS-A), Specialty (S), Entry (CFSM-E), Intermediate (CFSM-I), Management (CFSM-M), or Leadership (CFSM-L). Definitions for each of these practice levels are at the bottom of this page.

Note: This suggested training plan has been reviewed by MN DHS licensing staff who have agreed that it will meet mandated training requirements.

Crosswalk of 245D Training Requirements to Applicable CDS Content

According to Subdivision 4 and 5 of rule of 245D.09 Staffing Standards , a license holder must provide initial and annual training to direct support staff on the topics identified in subdivision 4, clauses (3) to (11). Annual training under subd. 4, clause (9) is not required as long as the certification is current.
