TIES Inclusive Education Roadmap
Step 1: Getting Started
In Step 1, you will consider how to:
- Recruit a diverse Equitable Inclusive Leadership Team (EILT),
- Develop organizational structures and processes for the EILT,
- Explore the organization's data related to Least Restrictive Environment (LRE),
- Reflect on the organization's mission and vision for all students and its alignment with the work of the EILT,
- Determine strategies and resources for developing buy-in for inclusive education with multiple stakeholders, and
- Begin building the Inclusive Education Action Plan.
When starting to think about developing inclusive education systems, a frequent question is "Where to start?" Leaders may have identified the direction they want to go and even activities they wish to implement but may not have a plan with intended outcomes to guide their work.
Step 1 of the Inclusive Education Roadmap provides this starting point. It has three parts:
- recruiting and developing the EILT (a diverse group of strategic people that will help lead the change process), including the structures and processes for the EILT to collaborate and communicate effectively,
- ensuring that the mission and vision of the organization are inclusive of all students, and
- supporting staff to understand the why of inclusive education for students with disabilities, including students with significant cognitive disabilities, and the importance of committing to this direction.
The foundation built in Step 1 will be continually revisited throughout the journey of building and sustaining an inclusive education system for ALL students. Regularly, the EILT should ask itself if it hears all of the voices and perspectives needed to make informed decisions. And, how can it continually build an understanding of inclusive education beliefs and practices with new members in the organization and the broader community?
