Summary

Probability and non-probability sampling are the two major methods of sampling typically used. There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods.

If you use a probability sample, the results are more likely to be generalizable to the target population, but this sampling method can be more costly.

Recruitment efforts should take into consideration:

  • The sample size needed to answer the guiding question(s)
  • The representativeness of the sample needed to draw accurate conclusions about the target population
  • The resources needed to collect the data from the sample effectively
