The Student Engagement Instrument (SEI)

Students answer survey questions on a 5-point scale ranging from “Strongly Disagree” (1) to “Strongly Agree” (5).

Total scores of the SEI and each subdomain are averaged. Averages can indicate a student’s degree of engagement

• Very disengaged - Average scores close to 1.
• Moderately disengaged - Average scores close to 2.
• Neither engaged nor disengaged - Average scores close to 3.
• Moderately engaged - Average scores close to 4.
• Very engaged - Average scores close to 5.
