Change in residence size since 1977. 5 pie charts showing the proportion of LTSS recipients not living with a family member who lived in settings of 1 to 6 people, 7 to 15 people, or 16 or more people. The total number of LTSS recipients not living with a family member grew from 247,780 in 1977, to 255,673 in 1987, 342,244 in 1997, 437,707 in 2007, and 526,517 in 2019. The proportion living in settings of 1 to 6 people increased from 8% in 1977 to 83% in 2019, while the proportion living in settings of 16 or more people declined from 84% in 1977 to 6% in 2019.

The number of people with IDD getting supports while living somewhere other than with a family member increased from 247,780 in 1977 to 552,536 in 2019. Of the people who did not live with a family member the proportion who shared a home with 6 or fewer service recipients increased from 8% in 1977 to 83% in 2019.
