People in large state-operated facilities in FY 2020

18 states had closed all state-run IDD facilities of 16 or more people: Alabama, Alaska, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and West Virginia.

19 states served 1 to 300 people in those settings: Arizona California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

10 states served 301 to 1,000 people in those settings: Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington.

4 states served 1,001 to 2,841 people in those settings: Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Texas.

By 2020, there were 15,322 people with IDD living in 103 state-run facilities in 33 states.
